Supermarine Spitfires

Post by 334th_Padre » Sat Dec 09, 2017 5:06 am

When the Eagles Squadron's were activated as an operational fighter group, they were the first operational squadrons of the USAAF in the European Theatre. At first they flew Supermarine Spitfires as the USAAF did not have their own aircraft in the European theatre.

This photo taken in September 1942 shows pilots with new US uniforms and their Spitfires with new US markings at RAF Debden..

American aircraft would not arrive until 1943, so the 334th conducted missions in the spitfires they knew well.
